(FILM) What Is It? is right. I saw an early cut of this film back in the late '90s with the same setup: the film, a slide show, and then a Q&A with Crispin the Hellion himself. Images from it still burn terrible and bright in the back of my brain, particularly the opening scene wherein a giant sleepy face watches two snails slowly crawling in front of it. Suddenly, a giant pudgy fist slams down, killing one of the snails. Then—oh, the horrific shrieking! The other snail is screaming with a woman's voice. This is just a tiny drop in a nightmarish bucket. You have to see this on the big screen (literally—What Is It? won't ever be available on DVD), and it only screens with director Crispin Glover in attendance.
