Dear Men of Notre Dame:

If you don't like porn, don't watch it.

2

Jesus wept when I told him it was more for him to touch it than to watch me touch it.

3

Good Afternoon Katie,
You know what is interesting is that I believe we get the term pornography from the Greek word for prostitute "porni" and graph "write". Also, they have a point. Legal pornography and prostitution in the USA are essentially the same thing. The difference being that the former is regulated taxed and largely performed in front of a camera and the latter a "trade" done clandestinely and illegally (alas, BTW. It should be legal).

I don't think it should be banned on state campuses but private and/or religious (in principle) can regulate all they want to. It's their option.

Another fine piece.

5

So they are advocating for only gay male porn at Notre Dame?

6

"Legal pornography and prostitution in the USA are essentially the same thing."

Uh, not even close.

8

The anti-porn thing is a huge deal in the dumber parts of the Midwest. A few years back, there were billboards all over Nebraska featuring a photo of the former University of Nebraska football coach (who ranks just above Jesus in those parts) with the quote “Real Men Don’t Use Porn”

10

@6
How? Aren't porn stars paid? Explain.

13

"Porn is not acting” and “the overwhelming majority of contemporary pornography is literally filmed violence against women."

I notice you didn't address either of those arguments, Katie Herzog. Do you disagree?

15

@13 How come you only drop in here when there is an opportunity to chime in on the side of the religious zealots?

16

If they're truly concerned
for the Womenfolk, why don't they
delete Patriarchy?

17

Well boys, considering the tawdry history of the Catholic Church in regards to matters of sexuality and morality I suspect there's not much appetite for your pious bullshit.

18

Catholics care about women almost as much as they care about children.

19

There is definitely a trend of porn being more and more abusive, degrading, and violent to women, and I’m not sure how anybody who watches porn can deny this.

20

@19: I can deny that quite easily, because rather than asserting opinion as fact, I spent about 5 minutes googling it, and I found two studies that prove the opposite.

On the topic of prevalence of violence in porn in the last decade, and the popularity trend of videos considered more violent:
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00224499.2018.1451476

On the topic of perceived gender roles, in porn-viewers and non-viewers:
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00224499.2015.1023427

If you have evidence to the contrary, by all means, share it. I'm no scientist, so I don't know if the source I provided above for those two studies is reputable or something pretending to be. If you don't, then maybe you need to vary your viewing habits, because your preferred source of smut is likely serving you suggestions based on your viewing history.

21

@19 Yeah, not real clear what trend you are talking about. The vast majority of porn is fairly vanilla, if definitely not oriented toward giving a fuck about female pleasure.

But of course Dworkinites like @13 believe all hetro sex is violence against women. The woman is being penetrated don't you know?! And by all means let us use all the coercive means of the armed state to put and end to this scourge!

22

@15, I'm not religious. I can't help it if the religious right is occasionally accidentally right about something.

23

I haven't seen much of an increase in violent porn, though it's certainly out there. I have noticed a disturbing increase in the amount of "family porn" though. It really pulls me out of my enjoyment when the actors are playing mother/son, father/daughter & sibling roles. ew. I'm pretty strict about private browsing and blocking cookies so I don't think it's a viewing history thing. I just look forward to this trend fading.

24

Nebraska? That must be from a while back; Nebraska has lost relevance.

25

@20, " I found two studies that prove the opposite."

You mean, you found two abstracts that claim the opposite. The studies are behind a steep paywall. We know nothing about the studies and their quality and their evidence.

26

@25: Right. If you go back to read my previous comment, you'll see right in the center of the last paragraph that I included a rather lengthy qualifier at the end, that I couldn't personally swear to their accuracy. Armed with the information on those pages, you still could have also done your OWN googling (maybe even finding the Sydney Morning Herald post that discussed the study about prevalence and popularity of violence in porn), rather than bitching about something I already covered in the comments.

27

@25 Yeah like you are known for the quality of your 'studies', like that one about how sex work isn't work because OSHA would not approve of it.

Here's a question for you: 'porn is violence against women'. A feminist idea or a flimsy rationale for your congenital puritanical neurosis?

28

@27, it's possible to object to pornography on feminist grounds without being a "puritan" or "neurotic." Pornography is the filming of an actual sexual act where a man gets off and a woman pretends to. Anyone should be embarrassed to masturbate to such a thing. It's inherently anti-feminist and degrading, even absent any violence.

29

And "absent any violence" is optimistic.

30

also @27: Fuck OSHA, then. Such a progressive stance!

31

@26: You're the one who used the word "prove."
