The polie lie? Shocked I am.

At least they have a learning curve over at the CIA.

The first underwear bomber, whose father had worked off and on with for the CIA (an African national of high position), had difficulty boarding his European flight (no luggage, one-way ticket, no passport, on passenger no-fly list, and kept mumbling about "bombs") was aided past security with the help of an American man later identified as the embassy attache (the standard position for the embassy CIA guy).

The second underwear bomber simply works for the CIA; a much smoother story.

I guess McGinn's $41 million figure for SPD training was to aid them in telling smoother stories.

I don't know how the ad model works at all. Anything other than a small banner infuriates me. Seriously, for years any pop-up gets an under-my-breath "fuck you" and that business gets blacklisted. Anything blingy is nearly as bad. Ads are also why I stopped getting print papers, in addition to the wastefulness of all that paper. It's a real love-hate thing, and more visceral than pragmatic, as I know I'm not helping keep things alive except as a minor Crosscut donor.
@ 12, I was there in 94. Our trip to Moscow was just over a weekend, part of a two-week college visit to Saint Petersburg. We weren't warned of much street crime in Moscow, just on the trains. (I went to Chicago a year later, and some of the El stops were very sketchy in comparison.)

Sounds like the lice problem was either cleaned up, exaggerated when we were warned about it, or still a problem and you got lucky. I recall that the trains looked clean enough when we rode them...

There are a few things that need to happen to get people out of their cars and on public transportation. I lived in SLC for a few years before returning to Washington and some interesting things happened there:

1. With the Olympics a light rail system was put up the center of the valley and a spur to the University. There were all kinds of arguments that it would go unused and was a waste of tax dollars. It has become so popular new sections are being added to cover more of the metro area and easily integrates with commuter rail from surrounding counties. (Trax + Frontrunner in Utah | Central Link + Sounder here). In fact they had so much ridership they had adjust the train suspension for the standing room only crowds.

2. They looked at outlying commuter areas and came up with a service of commuter buses that were coaches with seats similar to touring buses, had minimum stop, and such features as on board WiFi. Professionals would start their day checking email and so forth during the commute. The hard plastic seats and "pack them in" mentality of urban buses (trips lasting a few blocks in city) just don't fit people who are commuting from outlying areas. People were willing to pay a little higher fare to be comfortable and productive on their commute.

Planners also have to understand that not everyone works in the same central core, including those who live in the city but work in the suburbs. For example, city dwellers who work on the MicroSoft campus, or Boeing at Paine Field. Nor are schedules always 9 to 5. So to be successful, the public transit system needs to be bi-directional and run extended hours. (I recently was recruiting for a position, our company is in Edmonds near the Sounder/Amtrak station -- I found a wonderful candidate that could use the one "reverse" commute train to get to the office in less than a half hour, but would have spent an hour or more getting home on busses for the lack of an end of work reverse commute train. They didn't take the job.)

Sometimes a community needs to invest in a route and run some lightly loaded runs to show that commuters can rely on public transportation before they commit to it. Take Edmonds as an example, if you had continuous light rail/commuter train service to Everett/Seattle/Bellevue -- you would serve not only southwest Snohomish County, but much of North Kitsap and NE Jefferson County (via Ferry) -- extend Mukilteo and you add Whidbey Island (via ferry), extend north and get Skagit.

      Seattle population may be 600,000
But King County is 1.93M.

Since the light-rail will connect Bellevue and SeaTac as well, I think we can safely assume that we're talking closer to 1 million people.

That said, I'd really like to see an accurate population number for the functional urban land of this city. Pure 'city limits' ignores quite a bit of the 'outlying' commuter population that is critical to Seattle. King County number include too many people further out, like Everett, who don't drive in to Seattle regularly.

This arena isn't a giveaway of public funds or subsidies. Chris Hansen actually would pay for it all himself. Public funding comes in the form of bonds that are repaid and the agreements have a lot of provisions to help ensure those do get repaid.
