  • What do you like to read when you poop?: how vulgar!
  • What's your biggest grammatical pet peeve?: its hard to say
  • Cowgirls, Inc. or Pony
  • What is your sweetest taboo?: butter
  • What song do you want played at your funeral?: I want the video of "may you always" by the Lenon Sisters, from the Lawrence Welk Show, shown. (Google it.) It will leave everyone sobbing, and thinking I was a much nicer person than I actually am.

I can see the Seattle Big Thinkers are out in force. The man hasn't even been inaugurated yet. Why don't you wait a bit and see what happens before you all start making grandiose statements?

I love Joan Mitchell! "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" is a great album!
Nov 19 Catalina Vel-DuRay commented on Microsoft Shareholder Proposal No. 2. (Or, Why Ken Hutcherson Believes "Hatred Speech" Is Hurting the Company's Stock Price.).
Generally - and perhaps universally - speaking, anyone who owns a share of a company's stock can speak at a shareholder's meeting. When I worked at the (former) Four Seasons Olympic, we hosted a lot of shareholder meetings, and almost every one of them would have a few cranks who got up and said a little something.

Microsoft probably feels that it's better to let him have his say, and then move on, rather than "silencing the Pastor"

I'm sure that whatever "Hutch" said was forgotten by everyone but him and the "prayer warriors" as soon as he said it.
Nov 15 Catalina Vel-DuRay commented on McGinn: The Mac Mayor.
I don't get it. To me, this election seemed to come down to Spacely Sprockets versus Cogswell Cogs: Two boring guys spouting pretty much the same line, which was not that different from what Nickels had to say. How anyone could get worked up about either one is beyond me.

You want to get worked up about stupid waste in the city? Get your panties in a bunch about this: There are thousands of reams of city letterhead with Greg Nickel's name on it that are going to get trashed come the inauguration. Every department, for some reason, has to have the Mayor's name on their letterhead. I'm sure it's some custom that dates back to the founding of the city, but why are we still doing it?

But no - it's much more exciting to get in some dreary argument about a handful of computers and cell phones.

I do all my slog postings from a Telex machine.

"Not for anyone on the Northside. I'll keep driving thanks. "

No one cares about the northside. It's corny.

Oh, calm yourself West Seattle Waiter. You're overwrought

The operations of the city go on, only the letterhead changes. That's the good thing about us bureaucrats.

Tomorrow morning, I'll go to work, uncover my Selectric, put my sweater on the back of my chair, and start my workday as a Traveling Electrical Hostess. Later, I’ll get into a city Prius, and go to the field, advising people on their electrical services, and having well-modulated, genteel discussions about things like heat pumps, kilowatt hours, and handholes (which isn’t nearly as dirty as it sounds).

It's what we do, until we retire.
Nov 11 Catalina Vel-DuRay commented on "...a well armed and well regulated militia...".
Basil dear, I know you don't get out much - not that I don't try - and that your studio apartment has that mildew problem so common to basements, and that the exterminator changed his formulation last month, which gave you that cough that worries me so. But still: you're recycling liberal conspiracy theories about the 2008 election. Are you sure you're OK?

I would think you'd have more pride. I don't know why I think that, but I do.
Nov 11 Catalina Vel-DuRay commented on Any Time Is No Longer Taco Time.
I lived above the Taco John's in Iowa City back in the '80's. I remember it being very good, but I was drunk most of the time, so who knows.

btw, Mexi-Nuggets are the exact same thing as Potato Olés. I may have been drunk, but I know my Tater Tots and Lawry's Seasoned Salt.

Well, I - lilly white, with that Y chromosone, no connections, and no particular skills (other than being gracious and setting a nice table) - got a job with the city.

But you are right about how long it takes to get hired. I was able to wait it out because I was back home in Iowa, taking care of Mother Vel-DuRay, who was having a bit of the cancer (she's all remissed now, knock on wood) and I had a good severance from my old job. Otherwise, I would probably be back at the Olympic Hotel, writing menus and soothing mothers of the bride.

I wish these folks luck: The city budget outlook sucks, we're facing furloughs and layoffs next year, and there just doesn't seem to be any money. Hopefully, they'll bring a breath of fresh air to the city, and some new ways of doing things.

Just as long as those new ways of doing things don't involve getting rid of slightly portly, middle-aged utility workers who enjoy commenting on the Slog. I don't want to go back to being just another Beacon Hill Housewife, and my bank account would hate me for it.
